After completing a bachelor's degree in industrial design in 2007, Montreal designer Tamara Bavdek needed a change. A big. So, after nearly 20 years of long hair, she decided to chop it all off for an unconventional retro cut. Knowing well that a touch of femininity would be lost with this new style, she was inspired by the 1960s... She was struck by the amazing look of Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol's muse. She wore very large jewelry that appeared to be made of lace, and bold makeup. This look was a great source of inspiration and that's how it all started... A stroke of genius, and after a bit of experimentation the designer realized that lace is to textiles what gold is to metals and diamonds to rocks, and that nothing beats huge, ultra-light jewelry! Today, although the hair has grown back, the passion for unique and original pieces is still very much present. Founded in Montreal at the end of 2008, the This Ilk brand is now distributed in more than 30 stores in Canada, the United States and around the world.
